//Mmmm //tasty – Pure gens up FlashArray//m for fifth time

Faster controllers and boosted flash capacity

Fifth-generation all-flash arrays have been announced by Pure Storage, with increased capacity and faster processors.

The controllers have received a 20 to 30 per cent performance increase and 100 to 276 per cent capacity increase compared to the previous generation, it is claimed.

Pure says object scale has been improved by 10x, enhancing overall system scalability and enabling large-scale Copy Data Management with up to 50,000 snapshots on the system.

FlashArray//m has delivered six nines availability – 99.9999 per cent uptime. This, Pure says, is inclusive of upgrades and maintenance, across both hardware and software, and without requiring a second array configured with replication.

Here are the details:

  • m70
    • Originally scaled to 136TB raw/450TB usable and now from 42TB to 512TB raw/1.5PB effective
    • Needs 7U of rackspace
    • Was 300,000 IOPS and now 370,000
  • m50
    • Scaled to 88TB raw/250TB usable; now from 20TB to 176TB raw/500TB effective
    • Was 220,000 IOPS; now 270,000
  • m20
    • Scaled to 40TB raw and now from 5TB to 80TB raw/250TB effective
    • Was 150,000 IOPS and now 200,000
  • m10
    • Scales from 5TB to 10TB raw/25TB effective capacity
    • Up to 100,000 IOPS

All IOPS numbers are based on 32K blocks.

The software, Purity S v4.8, provides a new Always-On QoS feature requiring no configuration. Any application can burst up to the maximum utilization of the FlashArray//m, as long as it is not impacting other applications. If it does, then it's throttled back.

There is Network Port ID Virtualization support for host-transparent upgrades.

The new //m20, //m50, and //m70 systems with Purity OS v4.8 are now shipping. Pure is also introducing Always-On QoS with immediate availability in an Early Access Program for select customers. General availability is planned for this quarter of 2016. ®
