Mid-range storage array buyers' report leaves out .... guess who?
Memory fault or what could explain vendor exclusion
Beancounting firm DCIG has published a midrange storage array buyers' report – with one or two suppliers missing.
DCIG states that its Buyers' Guide "weights, scores and ranks more than 100 features of seventeen (17) arrays from ten (10) different storage providers.”
Its spiel continues: “These 17 storage arrays are drawn from a pool of more than 130 storage arrays in DCIG’s 2016 Enterprise Storage Array Body of Research. To identify products likely to be of greatest interest to midmarket organizations, DCIG evaluated arrays with a maximum raw storage capacity of 500TB."
Let's see which vendors are in:
- AMI
- Dell
- EMC
- Fujitsu
- HPE
- iXsystems
- Nimble Storage
- Pivot3
- Seagate
- Tegile
And now let's see which ones are out:
- HDS
- Huawei
- IBM
- Lenovo
- NetApp
- Nexsan
- Tintri
Oh dear. We wonder why vendors with the market presence of HDS, IBM and NetApp are not in DCIG's report?
Software-defined array storage vendors such as DataCore, FalconStor and Nexenta are also excluded.
This reminds us of DCIG excluding EMC from an all-flash array report in November last year. At the time senior EMC sources told us they did not engage with so-called pay-for-play analyst reports and refused to pay DCIG any money for the AFA guide's production.
Yet EMC products are included in this DCIG guide.
Is NetApp canning its FAS mid-range products? That might be it ... no?
Well, could DCIG's analysts, in their enormous focused concentration on the minutia of AMI and iXsystems arrays, have forgotten momentarily about HDS, IBM, NetApp, Tintri and the other vendors? It's plausible, or understandable, even; it's certainly a busy, busy world in analyst-land.
