Comcast bleeds cash, users

While other US telcos have had a rough go of it this financial quarter, T-Mobile US and Comcast had good and bad news for Q2 2016 to share with investors this week.

For Comcast, in the three months to June 30:

  • Revenues of $19.3bn, up 2.8 per cent on the year-ago quarter.
  • Net income of $2bn, down 10 per cent from $2.2bn a year ago.
  • Video customer losses of 4,000 were the lowest for Comcast in 10 years, an encouraging figure for a company that has been fighting off a cord-cutting exodus for years.

For T-Mobile US:

  • Revenues of $9.2bn, up 12.8 per cent year-over-year.
  • Net income of $225m, down 37 per cent from $361m a year ago.
  • Total customer additions were 1.9 million, including 890,000 postpaid net ads. Another strong sign for T-Mobile US's efforts to build up its subscriber base.

"Quarter after quarter this team continues to deliver results that are the best in the business despite the competition's best efforts to compete," T-Mobile US CEO John Legere said. ®
