Catastrophic 123-reg VPS cockup deletes Ross County FC website

Biz admits coding error 'affected' thousands of servers

Ross County Football Club's website was among those deleted amid a web-hosting company 123-reg's mega cock-up.

Virtual servers vanished for a large number of customers after the hosting firm ran a script containing a catastrophic error at 7am on Saturday 16 April as part of its clean-up process on the 123-reg VPS platform.

“We are investigating the restoration of each VPS on a case-by-case basis and are working individually with customers to keep them informed of the website recovery process. We are working as quickly as we can to restore service to normal,” the company said in a statement.

Ross County FC said its website – hosted by 123-reg – has been down since Saturday “and may be down for some time," the club said today.

"We're working hard with our technical partner to reinstate the site ASAP," the Scottish Premiership club tweeted today.

David O'Connor, of RCFC, told the BBC: "Online is a crucial part of our ticket sales, selling merchandise and the website is where fans go to to reserve seats on buses and find match information."

He added: "Coming to the ground is not easy for the fan who works nine to five. Our fan base is always widely spread out across the Highlands and it means supporters having to travel quite a distance to get to Dingwall."

A spokeswoman from 123-reg added: "We would like to extend our apologies to affected customers and assure them that we are doing everything we can to restore their data as quickly as possible. We are keeping customers informed as we restore their websites." ®
