Oof! Acer suffers 25 per cent hit to PC sales in turbulent Q1

Gartner numbers make hard reading for Lenovo and Dell too

Acer and Lenovo's PC sales tumbled during the first three months of 2016 as the EMEA market contracted by 10 per cent, according to Gartner.

While everybody except Asus was down compared to 12 months ago, Acer was the single biggest loser.

The ailing notebook maker shipped 26.4 per cent fewer PCs – 1.5m units – leaving it just 7.8 per cent of the market.

Lenvo was next biggest loser, shipping 12.6 per cent fewer units in the first months than a year ago – 3.6 million – leaving it with 18.8 per cent market share.

Dell came in third, shipping 7.6 per cent fewer units – 1.9 million – yielding 9.9 per cent of the market.

HP Inc also saw a decline – 2.5 per cent with 4.3 million units – but it remained the sector’s single biggest manufacturer, with 22.4 per cent of the EMEA market.

Gartner noted HP had performed better in the region than it had worldwide despite the dip in shipments locally.

The analyst credited relative strength in the UK and German consumer PC market.

Overall EMEA PC sales fell 10 per cent year-on-year, to 19.5 million units.

Gartner reckoned while the fall as consistent with worldwide figures, the region had been affected by a number of unique factors.

Some vendors struggled with inventory backlogs, while the overall business PCs and notebooks market declined as buyers evaluated Windows 10. Other difficulties included the extended Christmas and New Year holidays and economic difficulties in Russia and the Ukraine. Exchange rates played their part in depressing the market, too. ®
