Amazon Shocker: Firm recalls Fire and Fire Kids power adapters

In 'rare cases' users might get electric shocks

Amazon is the latest fondleslab maker to initiate a voluntary recall and exchange programme for potentially shock-inducing power adapters.

The affected adapters for the seven inch Fire and Fire Kids Edition slabs were sold only in the UK and Republic of Ireland from September last year.

“We have determined that, in rare cases, when the power adapter… is pulled from the wall socket, the adapter assembly may detach and create a risk of electrical shock,” Amazon stated.

“Customer safety is our top priority, and we are proactively offering to replace these power adapters with a new adapter, free of charge. We encourage customers to exchange their original power adapters.

Punters have one of two options; apply for free replacement adapter or ask Amazon to add a £12 voucher to your Amazon account to purchase the adapter of your choice.

In the meantime, users can use a USB cable connected to PC or another compatible adapter to charge the Fire devices.

The Fire power adapters shipped in other countries and those with the Fire HD and Fire HDX are not included in the recall.

In January, Microsoft confirmed that power cords sold with the first, second and third generations of the Surface Pro were being recalled following 56 customer reports of “overheating and emitting flames”.

This was caused by the cords being "wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time", the vendor warned.

As we revealed, that included 2.25 million units in the US alone, and roughly five million worldwide. ®
