Cisco borgs IoT outfit Jasper Tech for US$1.4 billion

And just like that, Cisco has an internet of things business unit

Internet of Things service platform outfit Jasper Technologies has fallen into the maw of Cisco for US$1.4 billion.

Twelve-year-old Jasper started life as a machine-to-machine wireless comms specialist (Jasper Wireless) before changing its name in 2014.

According to Cisco's blog post about the acquisition, Jasper has 3,500-plus enterprise customers, 27 service providers, and users in 100 countries.

Jasper's CEO Jahangir Mohammad will join Cisco to head up an Internet of Things business unit, reporting to IoT and Collaboration senior veep Rowan Trollope.

The business unit will be charged with crafting an end-to-end IoT solution, “interoperable across devices”, and able to work with “IoT service providers, application developers, and an ecosystem of partners”, Cisco's announcement says.

Jasper's current system focuses on machine-to-machine deployments with cellular connectivity, with a SaaS platform to manage device connectivity. Tesla is probably Jasper's highest-profile customer.

One of the first tasks of the IoT business unit will be to expand the Jasper portfolio with Wi-Fi support and analytics.

The $1.4 billion is an unspecified combination of “cash and assumed equity awards”, leaving some wriggle room about what the final price will be.

Jasper had a high-profile endorsement last year, announcing the integration of its platform with Microsoft Azure. ®
