CommVault creeps into Nutanix’s hallowed Acropolis citadel

Supports user’s hypervisor switcheroo between Nutanix's three

CommVault has added Nutanix Acropolis hypervisor support to its existing vSphere and Hyper-V support on Nutanix's products.

Nutanix makes a family of HCIAs. These are hyper-converged infrastructure appliances, combining compute, storage and networking hardware and software in a single product.

It builds its own products and partners with Lenovo for separate hardware-based ones. Acropolis is its own, KVM-based hypervisor for these products.

CommVault’s Data Platform, renamed from Simpana, is a data protection and management software system that supports a wide range if server hardware and software environments to protect and manage application and system data.

CommVault says it’s the only data protection software platform that provides hardware snapshot integration and agentless protection for all three hypervisors on Nutanix. The Acropolis support integrates Commvault’s IntelliSnap and Nutanix’s Acropolis Distributed Storage Fabric snapshot functionality means customers can change hypervisor and stay with the same data protection scheme.

This means they can optimise for cost by playing hypervisor switcheroo and, for example, avoid any VMware tax, while not suffering any diminution in their protection arrangements. This plays well both for Nutanix, wanting to push its Acropolis product, and CommVault, wanting to grow with Nutanix.

ESG senior analyst Jason Buffington provided a supportive quote: “Converged and hyper-converged systems make huge amounts of sense. … it also makes a lot of sense to integrate … snapshots, application-aware data protection and … data management technologies into joint solutions.”

With the Acropolis support, Nutanix and CommVault users will get:

  • Options for both streaming and snapshot-based backup for virtual machines
  • Shorter backup windows and accelerated restores through script-less management
  • Restore application consistency across enterprise applications like SAP, Oracle, Exchange, and SQL Server
  • Avoidance of multiple point-products with a single, fully integrated system across physical, virtual (VMware, Hyper-V, and Acropolis Hypervisors) and cloud-based data

Basic support for Nutanix Acropolis is available now to select customers, with more advanced IntelliSnap technology integration coming later in the quarter. ®
