Hapless mobile operator TalkTalk's phone network has been hit by an outage, leaving customers without dial tones – and without service – on landlines.
In a statement TalkTalk said: "We’re experiencing problems with no dial tones on some landlines. If you're affected by this, you may still be able to make or receive calls.
"We're working hard to fix this issue and will provide a further update here by 2:00pm today. We're really sorry for any inconvenience caused, due to this fault we're experiencing high call volumes."
One of the TalkTalk customers who emailed The Register confirmed that he could not raise a dial tone, but said that he could neither make nor receive calls. He said calling landlines prompted the recorded message "Number not recognised".

In October a major hack at the company led to the personal details of more than 156,000 people being accessed by hackers and the company estimating £35m in losses related to the incident.
On Monday customers of EE, O2, Giffgaff, and BT Mobile were also unable to make calls due a network issue with BT. ®
