CIOs: Tell us about your biggest disaster and how you survived it

Fat fingers, trainwrecks and everything else in between

Reg roundtable Walt Disney said “a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you”. Well, for all his talents, Walt wasn’t attempting to secure an aging IT system while evolving a vision to “digitalise” his company and secure its future in the long-term.

We suspect that’s what many of our senior readers are doing, though, and that’s why on November 18, The Register Roundtable will be discussing:

My biggest IT disaster and how I survived it

What kind of disasters are we talking about? Not just the sort that can be dealt with by having a mirror facility and a box of backup tapes.

We’re talking about those that might not be your fault but which have the potential to quickly destroy your business - having a truck drive into the side of your datacentre for example.

Or those conscious decisions, which overnight turn from perfectly logical to apparent stupidity. Such as making a strategic bet on an architecture, just as the vendor behind it pulls the plug.

Or the gut-wrenching realisation that a low-level employee has inserted code into your systems that puts you in the firing line of digital activists, government regulators or both.

We’d like you to join us, and your peers, to discuss what issues have caused you sleepless nights, how you got on top of them, and indeed, whether you really did turn tragedy into a triumph.

We’ll be meeting at a central London Hotel on November 18 at 3pm. The formal discussion will last 90 minutes, and then we’d like you to join us to continue the conversation informally over fine wine and cocktails. The whole event will be conducted under the Chatham House Rule.

We’ll be keeping the numbers down to no more than 12, but please register your interest below and we'll be in touch to let you know if you've secured a place. If you don’t make the list for this event, don’t worry, we’ll make sure you’re on the list for future events. To register, click here. ®
