Arista joins data centre 25/50/100 Gbps switch battle

Broadcom's Tomahawk underpins high-speed low-cost iron

Arista Networks has joined the race to get 25 Gbps Ethernet kit into hyperscale data centres.

The company, a member of the cabal that last year kicked off the 25/50/100 Gbps effort along with Google, Microsoft, Broadcom, and Mellanox, has now lifted the cloth from a range of switches in leaf and spine form factors.

Using the Tomahawk switches that Broadcom unveiled in September 2014, Arista is pitching a 1RU 32-port switch, and a couple of 2U modular switches.

Martin Hull, the company's director of product management, told The Register's HPC sister publication The Platform that the 32-port unit will ship for under US$1,000 per port, while the bigger units will roll out at around $2,000 per port.

The range includes:

  • The 7060CX-32S, 32 ports of 10/25/40/50/100 Gbps Ethernet goodness claiming "wirespeed" performance on all ports;
  • The 7260QX-64, a 2RU system offering 64 ports at 40 Gbps, and less than 5W per port power consumption;
  • The 7260CX-64, which has 64 "line rate" 100 Gbps interfaces;
  • The 7320X-32C, a new line card addition to the 7320X range, letting the chassis support up to 256 100 Gbps ports per system. Each port can be configured to run 100 Gbps, 40 Gbps, two 50 Gbps, four 25 Gbps, or 10 Gbps ports;
  • There are also new models in the 7050X range, the 7050SX-72Q and 7050TX-72Q, combining 48x10 Gbps ports and six QSFP+ 40 Gbps ports, with support for VXLAN routing at wire speed.
