Enchanted Lenovo uses StorMagic spells for hyper-convergence

Arrow’s channel to build hyper-converged SMB gear

Lenovo and StorMagic are offering three hyper-converged configurations from Arrow partners that are channel-integrated, pre-tested and ready to plug-and-play for less than $5K.

The entry level is a two-node cluster (without hypervisor) starting at $5,000, significantly less than Nutanix, SimpliVity and EVO: Rail hyper-converged appliance start points.

There are 3 main configurations, with the starting point of each being two Lenovo server nodes with SvSAN software pre-configured and deployed by an Arrow partner:

  • Entry: two 1U ThinkServer RS140 nodes, the 2-node cluster starts at 2TB for $5,000 and supports up to 8TB internal capacity.
  • Mid: two 1U System x3250 M5 nodes, the 2-node cluster starts at 2TB and supports up to 24TB internal capacity.
  • High: two 2U ThinkServer RD650 nodes, the 2-node cluster starts at 2TB and supports up to 74TB internal capacity.

This hyper-converged product set is not Lenovo or StorMagic-branded because it is not a Lenovo-StorMagic OEM deal. Customers order a Lenovo ThinkServer or System x server with StorMagic SvSAN software through Arrow Electronics in North America.

This 2-server Lenovo/StorMagic vSAN is basically the same software as the one VMware endorsed in February. Some enhancements in centralised management with Microsoft SCOM and VMware vSphere 6.0 have been introduced since then, though the core SvSAN software functionality is the same.

We have here hyper-converged appliances for small and medium enterprises which means they can do away with networked storage arrays, using the SvSAN virtual SAN instead. StorMagic CEO Hans O’Sullivan hammered this home, saying; “StorMagic’s partnership with Lenovo eliminates the need for complex SANs and drives down the cost of hyper-converged solutions that underpin an enterprise-class, highly available IT infrastructure.”
