Ingram Micro feasts on European old-mobe specialists

Wolfs down CANAI and Clarity Tech to 'own' the services lifecycle

First Ingram Micro dug deep to acquire handset seller Brightpoint and now it is buying up companies to deal with the devices in middle age and at the end of their life.

The tech wholesaler has subsumed CANAI Group, which specialises in trade-ins, reuse, recycling and global redistribution.

High Wycombe-based CANAI runs a facility which cleans mobes for end-users, retailers, manufacturers and those operating the networks, in compliance with EU regs.

Some one billion phones are produced each year but around ten per cent are recycled. In the US alone, people upgrade their phone every 18 months on average, meaning roughly 130 million handsets are discarded each year.

CANAI was formed in 2006 and its point-of-sale “trade-in solution” is used in more than 6,000 retail outlets in Europe and Africa, the business claims.

The minnow filed abbreviated accounts for the year to 31 October 2013 showing net assets of £9,237.

In addition, Ingram has also chomped down on Portugal-based Clarity Technology, which provides reverse logistics, repairs, parts, accessory management and repair avoidance.

Selling commodity devices is all well and good, but Ingram wants to put some meat on its services operations where the margins are relatively fat.

The financial details of both deals were undisclosed. ®
