VMware shuffles the executive deckchairs

Big guns Eschenbach and Chadwick aimed at growth markets

VMware has made a round of new executive appointments.

President and chief operating officer Carl Eschenbach now also has corporate strategy and business development on his plate.

Jonathan Chadwick will add chief operating officer duties to his current role as chief financial officer. He and Eschenbach will work together on “key operational priorities reflective of the opportunities ahead for the company”. With VMware known to be targeting end-user computing and hybrid cloud, it looks like the two will be trimming sails to get both efforts moving at maximum speed.

The company has also promoted three folks:

  • NSX daddy Martin Casado will become leader of the leadership of the company's networking and security business unit;
  • Bill Fathers is now executive veep and general manager of Virtzilla's hybrid cloud unit;
  • There's now a “chief people officer” role, belonging to Betsy Sutter who is in charge of attracting, retaining, and developing VMware's people.

That the personnel changes have been made mere days ahead of VMworld is probably co-incidental: important decisions don't stop being made just because there's a big trade show to run.

But throwing two people - Eschenbach and Chadwick – at the task of readying VMware to tackle its hand-picked growth markets might suggest it's been decided extra focus and senior resources are needed to succeed.

El Reg's virtualisation desk will attend VMworld and has been promised your correspondent will find himself in Eschenbach's presence. We'll see if there's anything more to these moves than meets the eye, other than a bit fo extra business for whoever prints VMware's stationery. ®
