Gartner mages throw deduping backup appliance bones, claim EMC's in lead

Dell and IBM - niche players?

Gartner has released its first deduplication target backup appliance Magic Quadrant, confirming EMC's Data Domain in the lead but placing HP in a distinct second place, Quantum as a challenger and Exagrid as a visionary – surprise all round.

The MQ is a (the) classic 4-box diagram, placing suppliers in a 2D space defined by "ability to execute" and "completeness of vision" axes. The bottom left box is for niche players, the top left for challengers, the bottom right for visionaries and the top right for leaders.

Gartner places six suppliers in the niche category, two in the visionaries' box, one in the challenger's quadrant and just two in the leader's area: HP and EMC.

Only Sepaton (high-end product) and Exagrid are in the visionaries quadrant, Exagrid higher and further to the right, due to the Gartner people scoring it higher on:

  • Geographic strategy
  • Vertical/industry strategy
  • Marketing strategy
  • Sales strategy
  • Innovation
  • Offering (product) strategy
  • Marketing understanding

Quantum is the only challenger, just over the boundary from the niche players' box, which contains Riverbed, NEC, FalconStor, and, surprisingly, both Dell and IBM with Fujitsu the highest-placed supplier of all the nichers. That's nice for Quantum and its DXi range.

Up in the leaders' quadrant, HP, with its StoreOnce federated dedupe products, is ahead of all these other suppliers but is still a long, long way behind EMC with its dominating Data Domain products.
