Google outlines research priorities for boffin grants

Everything from cloud to policy

Google, through luminary Vint Cerf, has given the world a glimpse of its immediate research priorities.

You'll be pleased to know that The Chocolate Factory still ranks freedom of speech and expression, Internet governance, standards, accessibility, access and IP protection as things it thinks need more study.

In this post from Friday, July 25, Cerf provides guidance on what Google is looking for in its next round of Faculty Research Grants (here).

Unsurprisingly, given its own fibre investments, Google would like academics to look into the economic impacts of gigabit access, along with measuring social and economic effects of spreading 'net access more widely.

Likewise, the long battle over international Internet governance is also on Cerf's mind: “We are interested in supporting top researchers who analyse and contribute insights into which practices and institutional structures work and which don’t”, he writes. It's an issue of particular poignance given the decision to move away from notional US government control of ICANN.

Under the standards and interoperability heading, cloud standards, resource management, Internet of Things access control, security and storage are all up for research dollars.

The international research grants offer as much as $US150k per awarded project. The next round opens at the start of October, with an application deadline of October 15. ®
