Blocks and Files Rumours circulating today suggest HP is going to add full data deduplication to its StoreServ (3PAR) storage arrays.
Deduplication identifies and removes duplicated blocks to prevent space being taken up by repetitive content. With a flash array, this also helps to reduce the amount of data written to the silicon which prolongs its working life.

HP has promoted 3PAR’s so-called thin technologies, but these don’t include full data deduplication or, indeed, compression. The company has an all-flash 3PAR array, the 7450, which is competing against EMC’s XtremIO and Pure Storage’s FA-400 line – both of which have full inline deduplication.
The thin technologies include
- Thin provisioning,
- Zero detect to transform imported fat volumes int thin ones,
- Deleted capacity reclamation.
HP’s backup-to-disk StoreOnce products have full deduplication with, HP says, “patented variable chunking and intelligent container-matching technologies.”
Our understanding is that inline deduplication will be added to StoreServ arrays and use custom chips (ASICs) to accelerate the work.
