Google sees Microsoft's iPad bet, raises with fondleslab Docs and Sheets

Mobile Apps get standalone options

Google is bringing its Docs and Sheets applications to Apple's iOS as a pair of standalone apps for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

The company said that the two productivity apps will be tailored for both Apple's handset and tablet lines with the ability to function with online, or offline as local tools. Both Docs and Sheets will be free downloads for users with Google Drive accounts.

Both Apps will require iOS 7.0 or later. The company is also offering mobile versions of the applications for Android devices on the Play store.

Google said that it is also planning an iOS port of the Slides presentation tool, though no date for that release was given.

"Every year, phones and tablets get better, and more of you are starting to use your mobile devices not just to view, but also to create and edit content," wrote Google product manager Brian Levee.

"And while the Drive app is a convenient place to store your stuff, we want to make it easier for you to quickly find, edit and create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on the go."

The release comes in the wake of Microsoft's long-awaited debut of Office for iPad. That release, the first tablet-optimized version of Office, operates as part of the Office 365 cloud productivity suite.

It also follows Google continues to push its Drive storage service. The company last month unveiled a major price cut to paid storage options as the company seeks to undercut rivals in the personal cloud market. ®
