Adobe wheels out 3D printer support for Photoshop Creative Cloud

Adobe has updated its Photoshop Creative Cloud (CC) so that users can output their designs to 3D printers.

The company hopes the upgrade will simplify the process of refining and fabricating stuff using the trendy gear: models, created using Adobe's software or imported from third-party tools, and built as three-dimensional objects.

"Before today there was a gap between the content produced by 3D modeling tools and what 3D printers need in order to deliver high quality results," boasted Adobe. "Now, by simply clicking 'Print' in Photoshop CC, creatives can bring 3D designs to the physical world."

The update includes tools to correct problems encountered during the construction of models, ensure water-tightness and add scaffolding structures to support objects during the printing process.

Today, the software supports MakerBot Replicator 2 and 2x as well as Zcorp Full Color and the 3D Systems Cube model printers. The update will also include integration with 3D printing service Shapeways, allowing users to export and upload their 3D models and then order delivered prints of their designs from the service.

Adobe is not the only company launching a 3D printing campaign. Specialist firm 3D Systems has landed a partnership deal with chocolate giant Hershey's to develop 3D-printed candy. The two companies will seek to build systems for creating 3D-printed things using chocolate and sugar.

3D systems demoed such hardware, which prints sugar items, at this year's CES tech conference in Las Vegas. ®
