Sysadmins fail to fix NHS IT snafu, HUNDREDS of appointments cancelled

Blighty's biggest health board downed by 'network issue'

IT staff at the UK's largest health board have failed to fix a major system error that's cutting health workers off from clinical and administrative services.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GGC) had to cancel 288 outpatient appointments yesterday along with four planned inpatient procedures, 23 day cases and 40 chemotherapy treatments when IT systems crashed.

The trust said early this morning that technical staff hadn't been able to fix the issue, although they had come up with a way to let chemotherapy patients be seen.

"Despite the best efforts of our IT technical staff who have worked throughout the night we have as yet been unable to resolve the problem," it said in a statement.

NHS GGC also said that emergency services wouldn't be affected, but said there would be patients with planned appointments who would run into difficulties.

A spokesperson for the trust could only tell The Register that the problems were down to a "network issue". They added that staff were working "flat out" to get the issue fixed and the trust expected to be able to update patients later in the morning.

The trust covers a population of 1.2 million people, with responsibility for over 300 GP surgeries, 35 hospitals and more than 50 health centres and clinics. ®
