Microsoft acquires cloud monitor MetricsHub

Fosters and borgs company in 5 months

Microsoft has bought a cloud monitoring and automation company and made its technology free on Windows Azure.

Redmond announced on Monday it had acquired MetricsHub, and in the same post said the company's Active Cloud Monitoring technology is immediately available for free to all Windows Azure customers.

The borging of the capacity planning and monitoring technology comes a day after Amazon launched a promotion for its own Trusted Advisor beancounter-as-a-service tech.

"MetricsHub will now offer all Windows Azure customers our premium product as a pre-release, no charge, service available through the Windows Azure Store," Microsoft wrote on Monday.

"We will also be converting all paying customers to this no-charge version of the service and MetricsHub technology will continue to keep your cloud applications running."

MetricsHub can generate – you guessed it – metrics from virtual machines, websites, and web and worker roles on Windows Azure. Administrators can then set policies for actions and scaling that can be triggered by the information.

The company said it has already processed "hundreds of billions" of data points, and taken thousands of automated actions since its apparent inception in October 2012.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The company had been a part of the Microsoft Accelerator program, powered by Techstars, a softy-scheme that puts startups through a three-month "deep immersion" program in the ways of Azure, Kinect, and whatever else Microsoft is currently eager to get developers building for. ®
