Another Apple retail chief crashes out the door

Third 'great leader' in as many months moves in

The Apple exec tipped to take over as head of its Retail unit has just quit the company, it was announced yesterday.

Jerry McDougal, vice president of Retail at Apple since 2000 has resigned to spend more time with his family.

McDougal's exit comes three months after his former boss John Browett, was booted out from his role as senior vice president of Retail in an executive cull by Tim Cook which also saw the departure of maverick software boss Scott Forstall. Browett only held down the job for months before getting pushed out, a move that most saw as resulting from pushback by the company's famously zealous retail staff.

Apple's VP of finance Jim Bean has been shuffled over into the veep of Retail role. It's a sideways shift, but puts Bean in pole position for the top job in Retail. Cook must want it filled soon …

Bean is an old hand in the company and has been VP of Apple Finance since 1998 according to his LinkedIn profile.

Apple gave out this statement on the changes, attributed to Steve Dowling:

Jim Bean is moving to Retail to help support our store teams. Jim has been at Apple for 15 years and is a great leader who understands our culture and focus on customer service.
