Capita IT Services boss Peter Hands has handed his staff a joyful end-of-year gift: an order to complete about a dozen mandatory training courses by 31 December.
The big cheese's memo caps off a year in which Capita froze bonuses and pay rises, threatened to outsource jobs to India, and went head to head with Unite over redundancies. Some workers at the integrator were more than a little jaded.

So a note from Hands telling employees to undertake a batch of corporate classes before 1 January didn't go down well with some staff, especially those who claimed this was the first they'd heard about the training regime.
"There are eleven mandatory training courses that must be done by 31 December. Capita hasn't said what will happen if we don't do it," one insider told The Channel.
These lessons include anti-bribery awareness, environment policy, health and safety, treating customers fairly, information security awareness, diversity awareness, and the rather nebulous module titled "Capita Induction".
Hands joined the reseller-cum-integrator after a spell as managing director of Logica's Global Infrastructure Management biz. Prior to that he was Logica's UK MD for outsourcing services and before that he was an HP and EDS veep. He replaced Capita ITS head Mark Quartermaine, who left the business in August after just six months on board and is now UK veep at Juniper.
A Capita spokeswoman told The Channel: "In order to ensure the best practice, employees should complete a series of 'refresher' training modules across topics on an annual basis."
She said staff were previously told about the courses and the communication from Hands was a "reminder" to complete "outstanding modules". ®
