McAfee seeks asylum in Guatemala

EXIF data was right

Fugitive software millionaire John McAfee is in Guatemala, as was accidentally revealed yesterday by stray EXIF metadata in an image posted at lifestyle magazine Vice (first denied by McAfee who claimed he’d faked the data).

McAfee has spoken to journalists in Guatemala City, reiterating his belief that the government of Belize, which he has fled, is persecuting him. He told the press conference that the persecution has gone on since he was arrested and his dog shot. He said at that time, he had only been released because of consular support from the US government.

That raid, by the Gang Suppression Unit, took place in April. However, McAfee is most immediately sought as a material witness to the murder of his neighbour, Gregory Faull.

The 67-year-old McAfee now says he is seeking the protection of the Guatemalan government, and in an interview with NBC offered a reward of $US25,000 for the capture of the “person or persons” behind Faull’s killing.

He claimed escaping Belize with his 20-year-old girlfriend involved changing his appearance, and among other things says he sent a “decoy” travelling on a North Korean passport.

Former Guatemalan attorney-general Telesforo Guerra, is acting as McAfee’s lawyer and says he is “managing his asylum”. ®
