Sony to add full HD display to 15in Ivy Bridge laptop

Budget Vaios outed too

Two laptop lines were refreshed by Sony this morning: the Vaio E and S.

The existing 14in E gains a new "wrap-around" look and 15.5in and 17.3in siblings. The bigger machines go on sale early in June, Sony said, but neither qualifies for Ivy Bridge chippery.

Instead we have a Core i5-2450M backed by 6GB of 1333MHz DDR 3 memory and a 5400rpm 750GB hard drive. Both have an AMD Radeon HD 7650M GPU on board, with 1GB or 2GB of VRam, depending on the screen size.

The 15-incher has a 1366 x 768 resolution, but the 17.3in Vaio extends to 1600 x 900. Both have 2.4GHz 802.11n, USB 3.0, a 1.3Mp webcam and tech to "boost speaker volume without distortion".

The Vaio S, meanwhile, also goes on sale in June, in 13.3in and 15.5in versions. The latter runs to an impressive 1920 x 1080 resolution, driven by an Nvidia GeForce GT 640M LE graphics chip, though it can also use the Ivy Bridge CPU's HD 4000 core when sheer graphic grunt is not required.

Again, 2.4GHz 802.11n, USB 3.0 and a 1.3Mp webcam are part of the package, as is an HDMI port, 8GB of 1333MHz DDR 3 and a 1TB 5400rpm HDD. ®
