Cleversafe pumps up object store, slaps on big data sticker

Cheaper boxes for bigger data

Object storage supplier Cleversafe is claiming its new arrays have the lowest cost/TB of any disk-array on the market, and the lowest watt per terabyte too.

Cleversafe targets unstructured data storage applications, with a big data marketing tag, and has a dispersed storage scheme for its object storage. This is based on data being sliced into pieces which are stored across different Slicestor boxes. It says its storage can survive simultaneous disk drive, server or network failures.

There are two new Slicestors, both using 4U, 60-drive enclosures crammed with desktop-class 3.5-inch disk drives.

The Slicestor 1410 uses 3TB 5,300rpm SATA drives with a total capacity of 135TB. Cleversafe says it "delivers approximately 3.2 W/TB at idle and 3.9 W/TB under load". It is intended for high-capacity, deep archive workloads.

The 1420 model switches to faster 7,200rpm SATA ones, still desktop class. If these are 2TB models then the capacity is 90TB. They use more power – 3.6 W/TB at idle and 4.9 W/TB under load – and are positioned for more active archive workloads, featuring a higher read rate.

The new boxes can be used with existing Slicestor networks and, although Cleversafe is boasting about having the lowest per-terabyte cost in the industry, it hasn't supplied any prices. ®
