Pogoplug launches cloud sync'n'store service

Cloud Engines, the company behind the Pogoplug DIY cloud gadgets, today launched an online storage service that doesn't require hardware at home.

Pogoplug Cloud is a Dropbox-style service: you get 5GB of online storage space for free, but you can expand that to 50GB or 100GB for $10 (£6) and $20 (£13) a month, respectively. That's what Dropbox charges, and is rather better value than Apple is offering with iCloud: £70 a year for 55GB.

Of course, this begs the question: when there are so many free services, do you need to pay for capacity?

Unlike the other services, Pogoplug Cloud is mobile centric. Apps auto-upload pictures and videos taken on phones. This content can then be shared through the likes of Facebook, Google+, Twitter and email.

Content can be uploaded from computers, but through a web browser not a native file system UI as do Dropbox and iCloud. Uploaded content can be streamed to your mobile through Pogoplug's iOS and Android apps.

Pogoplug Cloud is extendible through Cloud Engines' hardware.
