Riverbed joins OpenStack gang

Signs on dotted line

Riverbed has become the latest vendor to take formal membership of the OpenStack community.

The move is hardly surprising, since earlier this month Riverbed announced that its Whitewater appliances were being extended to include OpenStack and Azure clouds.

Announcing its decision to join OpenStack, Riverbed said its focus will be on adding OpenStack support to its WAN optimization technologies. OpenStack is gathering pace and becoming this week’s must-have affiliation, with more than 130 supporters signed on to date.

The NASA-Rackspace collaboration had already attracted attention from Riverbed, which had worked to make its virtual application delivery controller (vDAC) OpenStack-friendly.

“As a member of OpenStack, Riverbed will help with the design, specification and development of this open source cloud stack to deliver integrations of cloud optimization technologies for the needs of tomorrow’s applications,” Venugopal Pai, the company’s VP of global alliances said in a statement.

“Joining OpenStack strengthens Riverbed’s commitment to global organizations that strive to deliver applications in public, private and hybrid cloud environments without compromising performance.”

The aim of OpenStack is to create an open source cloud infrastructure, with core projects covering large-scale cloud compute deployments, redundant storage of static objects, and virtual disk images. ®
