Quantum has a new entry-level deduping product with capacity-on-demand upgrade by licence key.

The DXi4510 is the existing entry-level in a 3-tier range featuring the DXi6000 mid-level systems, starting at 8TB capacity, and DXi8500 high-end products. All you have capacity-wise with the DXi4510 is 2TB. The latest DXi4601 comes with 12TB of 2TB disk drive-based usable capacity. Only 4TB is activated at first and users can activate more, up to the 12TB max, by buying a licence key upgrade.

We might see this idea moving up into Quantum's mid-range DXi6000 systems.

Quantum suggests the DXi4601 is good for branch offices and claims it "achieves twice the deduplication performance of competitors in its class at half the price". Data Domain is Quantum's main competition.

The DXi4601 delivers 1.7 TB/hour in-line deduplication performance across all of its capacity points and is priced at $21,500 for a 4TB system. ®
