Lack of data holds up Exadata deployments

User group takes initiative on training

OpenWorld Lack of training and information on Oracle’s Exadata platform is proving a headache among some users, and the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) is moving to address concerns over the next 18 months.

Speaking to The Register, IOUG president Andy Flower explained that while the industry was certainly interested in the platform, there was a lack for information of potential customers that needed addressing.

“There's still a lack of transparency, but that's a problem across the industry - not just with Oracle," he says. “When you have things like Exadata where unless you're a customer there's no documentation available and very little to learn. That's why we're adding Exadata certification and training so there’s a little more transparency and sharing of knowledge."

The IOUG will begin rolling out its programs in the next six to 18 months, although it is already hosting webinars on the topic. This spring the Collaborate conference will feature Exadata training, and will then roll out one-off training sessions across the US. The IOUG has a member of Oracle on the board, he said, and the company has been very useful at sharing information, albeit under a nondisclosure agreement.

Overall, Flower said that the users were happy with what Oracle has been up to over the last year, particularly in the cloud and big-data spaces. In particular, he highlighted the increasing amount of support for virtualization within the Exadata platform. ®
