Sony distribution centre engulfed by fire

London warehouse may have been set alight by rioters

Sony Corp's compact discs and DVDs warehouse in Enfield, north London, was on fire throughout the night.

The Japanese electronics giant may have been caught up in the riots that sporadically swept across London on a third consecutive night of trouble in the capital. However, the firm is yet to determine the cause of the blaze.

Sony's 20,000 square metre three-storey warehouse has been burning since late last night and into the early hours of this morning, reports Reuters.

A spokeswoman at the company told the newswire that "there will likely be some impact on deliveries". The warehouse is Sony's sole content products depot in the UK.

"We cannot determine the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage yet because it's not possible to enter the building," the spokeswoman said. She added that no injuries had been reported at the site.

The Register has asked Sony for an up-to-date statement about the fire. But it hadn't got back to us at time of writing.

Elsewhere, riots have raged across the capital and looting and arson have been reported in Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool.

The twitterati has reacted this morning, with a hashtag – #riotcleanup – calling on Londoners to help tidy up, after violence spread across the city last night. ®
