HP to show off next gen EVA on the Vegas Strip

Viva Las Vegas: Fifth generation becomes P6000

EVA lives on: fulfilling promises made at 3PAR acquisition time, HP has confirmed a next-generation EVA array is coming, with an early access program available and more details due at its Las Vegas HP Discover event in June.

The EVA is HP's mainstream enterprise block access storage array, with around 100,000 deployed in customer sites. It is placed above the P2000 entry-level arrays, and also the P4000 iSCSI LeftHand arrays in its StorageWorks product line. HP's 3PAR arrays sit above the EVA, although overlapping it to an extent, and the P9000s, OEM'd from Hitachi in Japan, sit above them, again with a degree of overlap.

At the time of the 3PAR purchase, HP said there would be two more generations of the EVA which would fit into HP's Converged Infrastructure product portfolio. It has now confirmed the first of these, a fifth-generation product, revealing that it will feature a 6Gbit/s SAS back-end, SAS disk drive support, and 8Gbit/s Fibre Channel external ports.

El Reg also wonders if there could be 2.5-inch disk drives, SSDs and some form of data movement across tiers in the thing as well?

HP says it will have enhanced management and "advanced software features" and details of these will be unveiled at the HP Discover customer event in Las Vegas From 6 to 10 June. There is an HP Discover session, number 3313, which "will focus on the latest [EVA] enhancements" and discuss the EVA"s new "Continuous Access and Business Copy software functionality."

It is thought that thin provisioning – the ability to avoid allocating array capacity until it is actually physically needed – might also be one of the software features. ®
