Partners, kids force iPad owners to take more tablets

Get you effin' hands off my gadget

Tablets breed tablets, it seems, with 17 per cent of iPad owners having more than one in their home. A similar percentage of punters expect to purchase a second tablet too.

Ditto e-book readers. According to UK pollster YouGov, 15 per cent of Kindle owners have one or more extra units. For Sony's Reader, 13 per cent of owners have more than one.

The reason? Mostly - 36 per cent of cases - it's because the owner found his or her other half wouldn't stop using it, forcing the owner to acquire a new one.

You can bump the total up to 46 per cent if you include those folk who couldn't wrest their first tablet away from the kids. And then up to 59 per cent if you factor in the impact of the more nebulous "other family members".

Some 21 per cent of the 269 multiple-tablet types surveyed by YouGov said their second unit was a gift, possibly from the Significan Other who has been monopolising the first one.

Rather a lot of folk simply bought other, secondary tablets to try them out - 17 per cent said that.

Punters looking to buy another tablet are most likely to opt for the iPad (55 per cent), Kindle (35 per cent), BlackBerry Playbook (15 per cent), Sony Reader (12 per cent) and the Samsung Galaxy Tab (11 per cent).

It's worth noting that these numbers derive from a research conducted in November, before Samsung released the Galaxy Tab Luxury Edtion, which will surely put the others in the shade with its free Bluetooth headset? [No, it won't - Ed].

It also come before UK carriers began offering subsidised iPads.

Again, though it's those pesky partners and kids who are forcing tablet owners to consider buying another one. You don't hear netbook owners make the same complaint. ®
