Compellent bolts on first VMWare SRM disaster parachute

Brings you in to soft touchdown even if wings come off

Compellent is bundling VMware's Site Recovery Manager with its arrays to provide better disaster recovery in virtualised server shops. It will be the first VMware partner to do so.

VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager, to give it its full name, uses SAN-based replication to move virtual machines (VMs) and their datasets between the production and disaster recovery sites, using the vStorage APIs. It does this as part of its overall functionality of automating the process of building, managing and executing disaster-recovery plans.

SRM eliminates manual recovery procedures for VMware environments and provides non-disruptive testing and automated failover from a production site to a disaster recovery site.

It integrates with VMware Infrastructure and VMware vCenter Server, and with storage vendors' replication software so that virtual machines and their data sets can be moved from the failed site to the failover site. The data at the DR site is kept in synch via replication from the production site.

A person close to VMware and Compellent said he thinks Compellent is the first VMware storage partner to bundle SRM, being quicker off the blocks than VMware owner EMC. Others will no doubt follow suit.

The Storage Center SRM bundle is available immediately through Compellent resellers. Pricing for a 25 VM-pack system is around $83,000 with 6TB of 6Gbit/s SAS storage capacity. ®
