Western Digital has a free app for Android and iPhone smartphone users to look at photos stored on their home MyBook drive.
The app works for iPad, iPhone, iPhone 4 and iPod touch devices as well as most Android phones by connecting over the internet to a shared folder on WD's MyBook Live, World Edition and ShareSpace external drives. Users must have registered for WD's free remote access service
The photos can be viewed in a slideshow, seen individually or looked at in albums. They are automatically resized for viewing on Android and other devices. You can view photos by album, folder or all images, and search by date, folder name or file name.
Previously viewed photos can be accessed offline and photos can be shared via email, Facebook, Twitter, Picasa and other online methods.
WD says: "Users' photos remain private, safe and secure on their network drive, eliminating the need for time-consuming uploads to costly online photo services and the need to choose which pictures to sync to their Android smartphone."
Supported Android phones include Motorola's Droid, HTC's DROID INCREDIBLE, EVO 4G, and the Nexus One. WD's Photo Viewer app can be downloaded from the Android Market. Android has to be v 2.1 or later. ®
