Tosh has tiniest flash bits

Toshiba has started mass-producing NAND flash ships using a 24nm process, and is offering the world's smallest 8GB flash chips.

They use 2 bit multi-level cell (MLC) technology, and Toshiba will also add 32Gbit (4GB) and 3 bit per cell products fabricated with the 24nm process technology to its product line-up. The 24nm process chips also come with toggle DDR to boost data transfer speed.

Samsung has fast and high capacity 30nm flash chips in preparation which could enable 500GB notebook solid state drives using 32Gbit chips. On the face of it Toshiba could have 1TB solid state drives in mind with its 64Gbit (8GB) chips.

We reported mainstream flash chip suppliers were moving to sub-40nm process geometries in January. Micron, for example, has a 34nm process. Transitioning to sub-30nm processes will enable more chips to be made on a wafer and lower the cost per chip as well as enabling higher capacities per chip.

Apparently Samsung possesses a sub-30nm process as well as Toshiba. It is involved in 30nm, 3-bit MLC with Anobit and Seagate. ®
