Oracle has updated Sun's ZFS-using 7000 unified storage system, adding Fibre Channel connectivity and doubling its capacity.
The Sun 7000 was Sun's last independent storage product and has turned out to be a winner with its hybrid flash and hard drive storage pools, DTrace analytics software, and ZFS file system with its protection, deduplication and huge capacity.
Oracle, which acquired Sun in a prolonged acquisition starting last year, has added support for both 4 and 8Gbit/s Fibre Channel links, meaning the 7000 can become a data store in a storage area network (SAN).
It has also added support for larger 1 and 2TB SAS disk drives, using the 6Gbit/s SAS interface, taking maximum capacity up to 576TB, plus both inline deduplication and compression which, it says, have a multiplicative effect on reducing used disk capacity. The 576TB capacity can be used as a single file system or split up into multiple file systems, thousands if need be, or LUNs (SAN logical units).
Several aspects of this 7000 update were revealed in a roadmap last November.
Oracle says the updated 7000, with its support for both file and block storage and scalability, is a good fit for both private and public cloud storage requirements. ®
