Toshiba mulls merged hard and Flash drives

SSD + HDD = SSHD?

Toshiba is considering the creation of a hybrid solid-state hard drive containing Flash storage and a spinning disk.

Japanese newssite Tech-On reports that the company announced that combining HDD and SSD technology makes for an 80 per cent power saving over old-style HDDs.

Getting data stored in the Flash wouldn't require the hard drive's heads to move, and that would save energy - through not, we'd guess, 80 per cent. So the hard drive will have be spun down. Good for saving power, that - until you have to spin it up again to get data not held in the Flash. ®
