Firm punts USB 3 SSD

Drive whups SuperSpeed HDDs?

OK, so you may not have a USB 3.0 equipped PC just yet, but if you do, or you're planning to buy one, you may be after some external storage capable of making the most of the new bus' available bandwidth.

External hard disks have a job getting near SuperSpeed USB's full 5Gb/s of available bandwidth, but if Active Media Products' latest offering is anything to go by, an SSD will get you closer.

AMP's Aviator 2: DIY external SuperSpeed SSD

AMP's Aviator 2 external SSD doesn't go all the way, but the 200MB/s - or 1.6Gb/s. That's double the 100MB/s most HDD makers quote for sustained USB 3.0 drive performance.

Aviator 2 costs a mere $35 (£22) but that's without a 2.5in Sata SSD. Buy one with a 64GB drive pre-installed and the price goes up to $260 (£166), rising to $450 (£287) for a 128GB unit.

British buyers can pick up the Aviator 2 series through Amazon.com. ®
