OpenSUSE 11.3 hits milestone numero uno

LXDE debuts for small, cheap screens

The openSUSE Project has reached its first milestone for the upcoming 11.3 release, due in July.

Milestone 1 is the first of seven planned between now and late May. The development team said its primary goal is to test build interactions between newly-added features.

The first milestone features version 2.6.32 of the Linux kernel, development version 2.29.5 of GNOME, and the first release candidate of KDE 4.4 desktop environment.

The release also includes an openSUSE debut of a new desktop option: LXDE, short for Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment. LXDE is designed for computers with low hardware specifications like netbooks because it uses less CPU and RAM than other environments, the developers said.

On the application side of the build, Firefox is updated to the latest version 3.6.0, Thunderbird to version 3.0.1, and OpenOffice is bumped to version 3.2 beta 4.

A full list of the updates is available at the openSUSE project website. Milestone 1 can be downloaded here.

As always, remember milestone builds are very early in the development cycle and made for testing and debugging - and for people curious to see the general direction 11.3 will take. If you install this on a production system, you are a very silly goose indeed. The silliest of geese.

According to the roadmap, milestone releases will continue about once or twice per month until March. Two release candidate versions are planned for June and July, and a final public release in early July. ®
