BlackBerry gets Quickr with Lotus

More Connections from RIM

Research in Motion (RIM) is packing more support for IBM's Lotus platform into BlackBerry smartphones with a new mobile application for Lotus Quickr.

At the opening of IBM's Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Florida on Monday, RIM also unveiled a meatier version of the BlackBerry client for IBM Lotus Connections.

The new clients for Quicker (IBM's content-sharing software) and Connections (its enterprise social software) join Lotus Sametime, Domino, and Symphony on BlackBerry phones.

The new BlackBerry client for IBM Lotus Quickr will let users to navigate their enterprises' Quickr libraries and folders; upload, preview, and download content; and edit files within Quickr's version controls. It also hooks into the standard BlackBerry email application and Documents to Go suite to allow for editing Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

The BlackBerry client for Lotus Connections has been updated to include the ability to work with the software's profiles, communities, bookmarks, actives, and blogs.

RIM has also tinkered on the server-side of its offering — the BlackBerry Social Networking Application Proxy Server — to optimizes data sent between Connections and Quickr and BlackBerry phones to minimize data plan usage.

The release should be welcome news to those system admins tied to the Lotus platform. Expanding their alliance also plays well for IBM and RIM, who are sure to be facing an enterprise Google phone in the not-too-distant future loaded with Google Apps.

IBM has been less keen to add integration to the other mobile elephant in the room, the iPhone — likely because it's not generally seen as an enterprise-grade device. The iPhone can support Lotus Domino and Notes, but doesn't offer much support beyond that. ®
