Everything's coming up Mozy in Shanghai cloud

eYun to be built in a part Decho style

EMC's Decho unit has scored a design win with China Telecom. Its Shanghai Telecom branch will use Mozy to power its online cloud backup service.

Shanghai Telecom has 4m broadband users and 2m mobile users. It will offer an eYun service - eYun translating to e-Cloud - to its users with the first component being on-line backup. More components will follow. Decho and China Telecom say "the joint offer targets the vast number of Internet users in China," who will be reached by both China Telecom and Decho marketing efforts and distribution channels.

A trial before the launch involved 15,000 users. China Telecom sees the service as a growth prospect, with Dr. Qian Ming Hai, Shanghai Telecom's Internet division general manager, saying: “eYun is a major step for Shanghai Telecom to evolve from a telecom infrastructure provider to an end-to-end information service provider.”

Decho CEO Harel Kodesh said China represents the largest Internet market in the world and China Teleco is its largest broadband provider. With Shanghai being China's largest city, Decho has now got a good foothold in China.

However, Shanghai Telecom uses NetBackup and other Symantec products internally, with Netbackup replacing EMC's Legato Networker. Symantec has its own cloud initiative that is competing with Mozy, so things may not go all Decho's way in the People's Republic. ®
