VMare floats April date for cloud launch

Shower of forecasts

On April 21 VMware will announce its "next generation of virtualisation technology" with an event featuring VMware president and CEO Paul Maritz.

It is being billed as another giant leap, one that will help make cloud computing a reality for the data centre. Cisco and Intel will also be taking part in the launch of what looks to be ESX v4.0. Compellent has been certifying its SAN product against this coming version of the ESX hypervisor. StoneFly, an IP storage supplier, is also said to be working on ESX v4.0 certification.

Here is a slide from a Cisco consulting systems engineer, Brad Hedlund, mentioning v4.0 ESX and an ESX cluster of 64 physical servers. His note says " Virtual machines can now be managed like physical servers in terms of their network connectivity."

It goes on to say: "The network administrator does not configure the virtual machine interfaces directly. Rather, all configuration settings for virtual machines are made with Port Profiles (configured globally), and it’s the VMWare administrator who picks which virtual machines are attached to which Port Profile. Once this happens the virtual machine is dynamically assigned a unique Virtual Ethernet interface (e.g. ‘int vEth 10′) and inherits the configuration settings from the chosen Port Profile."

Also: "Fibre Channel HBA’s are not needed in the physical server, as the Fibre Channel connectivity is supplied by a Fibre Channel chip on the CNA from either Emulex or Qlogic (your choice)." ®
