You will soon be able to backup content on your Carphone Warehouse laptop to a data centre in the cloud, as Carphone W has signed a deal with Spare Backup.
Spare Backup backs up a computer's content to its data centres in the cloud. It's a Nirvanix, Carbonite, and Mozy competitor, and it's been signing up consumer-facing outlets to sell its software and service bundled with kit they sell and branded by them as a white label deal. It's signed up Sony for Vaio systems and Dixons Stores Group in the UK.
The Spare Mobile service is a new product that enables a mobile phone user to have content fetched from his or her PC and displayed or played on the phone.
Carphone has signed for the backup service and not Spare Mobile, according to a Spare Backup SEC filing. Spare Backup will create a website for Carphone Warehouse customers using the service, which will use Carphone Warehouse branding.
Carphone W will be entitled to a share of the monthly and annual customer fees to Spare Backup for the service which Spare Backup will pay on a monthly basis.
We asked both Carphone W and Spare Backup about possible use of the Spare Mobile service in the future, but neither were able to comment immediately. ®
