AMD releases overclockable tri-core CPU

'Energy efficient' parts too

Free whitepaper – eDiscovery best practices

AMD has rolled out its first tri-core 'Toliman' Phenom processor that's overclocker friendly.

The clock-unlocked Black Edition Phenom X3 8750 comes with an out-of-the-box clock speed setting of 2.4GHz. Each core has 512KB of L2 cache to itself and access to a shared 2MB pool of L3 cache.

The 65nm part will consume up to 95W of power when run at the standard frequency.

AMD also took the wraps off the "energy efficient" Phenom X3 8250e and 8450e. The two run at 1.9GHz and 2.1GHz, respectively, and consume no more than 65W. They have the same cache specs as the 8750. They too are fabbed at 65nm.

The Black Edition Phenom X3 8750 comes just a few months ahead of its successor, the 2.5GHz 8850, which recent roadmap leaks have revealed will ship in December. Next month, AMD will release a locked version of the 8850. Both chips have 95W TDPs.

AMD has yet to state the prices for the new chips.
