Adobe swings out Acrobat 9

Adobe Systems today released the latest version of its document creation software – Acrobat 9.

The San Jose, California-based company said that the revamped software includes built-in Flash and multimedia support.

Customers using the new version can now convert .Mov and .Wmv files to Flash content that can be embedded within PDFs alongside audio tracks and 3D models.

Adobe’s latest free media player – Acrobat Reader 9 – can play the movies, although the release of that version, as already noted by the firm, won’t be available for download until next month.

Other features in Acrobat 9 include the ability for people to play nice together and share docs in a real-time online environment, Adobe said.

Adobe today published US and Canadian prices for Acrobat 9 which comes in three varieties: Standard at $299, or $99 to upgrade, Pro for $449, or $159 to upgrade, and Pro Extended for $699, or $229 to upgrade.

Earlier this week the software firm pushed out an update to its Reader and Acrobat packages to close a pair of critical flaws in the popular packages.

Patches to version 8.1.2 of each application resolves vulnerabilities which create a means for hackers to drop malware onto vulnerable systems. Adobe said its latest versions were safe, however. ®
