AMD market share down in Q4 '07

AMD may have regained some lost market share between Q3 and Q4 2007, but it was down year on year, the latest figures from market watcher iSuppli reveal.

Over the last two quarters of 2007, AMD's share of the world PC chip market grew a tiny third of a percentage point to 14.2 per cent. Market leader Intel saw its share rise by a tenth of a percetage point to 78.9 per cent over the same period.

The losers were all the other x86 vendors out there - VIA, primarily. Combined the Others' share fell from 7.3 per cent to 6.9 per cent.

Good news for AMD? Not entirely, alas. Comparing Q4 2006 with Q4 2007, its share fell, from 15.7 per cent. So did the Others' share - down from 8.4 per cent.

Intel was the gainer, of course. Its market shared rose from 75.8 per cent in Q4 2006 to 78.9 per cent in Q4 2007.

Compare that to Q4 2005, when, according to Mercury Research, AMD took 21.4 per cent of the x86 market, up 78 per cent year on year.

Throughout 2007, Intel's share rose 4.3 percentage points while AMD's declined 2.9 percentage points.
