AMD is launching three new low-power, dual-core processors for embedded chip systems, such as point of sale devices, gaming machines, kiosks, and entry-level storage boxes.
The new Athlon X2 Dual-Core processor models 3400e, 3600+ and 4200+ raise the performance levels of AMD's embedded lineup, while keeping wattage on the down-low.
The 3400e model runs at a power envelope of 22 watts. Both the 3600+ and 4200+ chips have a maximum thermal design power (TDP) of 35 watts.
The chips are designed to be paired with the AMD M690E chipset, and can be combined with others such as the Broadcom HT-2100 and HT-1000 chipsets.
Availability is expected in the second quarter, and the parts will have a five-year life cycle to keep the embedded types happy.
AMD has also made available to vendors a set of blueprints based on the AMD Athlon processor for the Storage Bridge Bay 2.0 specification.
The reference design kit offers a standardized platform based on AMD's Direct Connect Architecture.
SSB is a standard for the enclosure controller slot which is compatible with hardware from a variety of vendors. Some of the major backers of the specification are Dell, EMC, and LSI Logic.
Fans of SSB say it makes building a system easier and less costly, while the other side worries it will put the squeeze on component suppliers. Given that many of the critics are in fact component suppliers, this seems like a reasonable stance for them to take.
AMD said their kit includes schematics and layout source files, with reference design hardware made available to AMD partner Newisys Data Storage. ®
