Apple's retail expansion into Glasgow has claimed a casualty - an Apple retail outlet operated for 10 years by Scotsys.

John McAleenan, Scotsys managing director, told The Register that the firm couldn’t compete against the might of Apple, which opened its desirable "destination shop in a class A location" a year ago.

"We tried to fight the good fight but we took a hiding when the new store opened", he said. "You just can't take Apple on head-to-head in the High Street."

McAleenan said a "handful" of staff were under threat from redundancy when the store, on the Great Western Road closes on 9 February. The reseller's retail outlet in Edinburgh and its head office in Bellshill will remain open.

Despite the store closure, McAleenan remains keen to maintain a strong relationship with Apple.

Scotsys will now focus on the majority of its business, offering bespoke support and advice to its customers. Retail sales currently account for 20 per cent of revenues, less than half of which comes from the Glasgow store, The Scotsman reports.
