Rackable Systems is launching a new four-socket server using Intel's dual- and quad-core Xeon 7200 and 7300 processors.
The C4108 comes in at 4U and industry-standard depth. It holds 256GB of memory using 1, 2, or 4GB 667MHz FB-DIMMs. Basic multiplication shows a fully-loaded system contains a total of 16 cores. That's twice the number of processors and memory Rackable put into its previous Xeon-based servers.
It holds four to eight 2.5" hot-swap SAS or SATA II drives. Max storage capacity is 1.168TB with SAS, and 960GB with SATA II. There are four PCI Express x8 slots (two with hot-plug support) and three PCI Express x4 slots.
Remote management features include IPMI support and keyboard, video and mouse redirection via a dedicated out-of-band network interface.
The C4108 runs the big 32- and 64-bit operating systems, including Windows Server 2003, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.
The box with 7300 series processors is VMware certified for Virtual Infrastructure 3.0.2 update 1 and 3.5.
